His Birthday... #8

He had a few requests for his 8th birthday... pizza, a party with friends "on" his actual birthday, a football theme, and a football cake that wasn't flat.  *wink*  So we made it happen... celebrating him... celebrating being eight... celebrating such a special day.
His day started with homemade butterscotch doughnuts and a candle.
He spent his morning playing with his Legos and setting up a fire  "scene".
There is no school on your birthday in the Hodges' household, so his morning was filled with more playing... with cars and playing "pretend" school with Ainsley.
For lunch, we headed to Pizza Hut to enjoy some pizza and open a couple of gifts.

Later that afternoon, a few friends came over to help us celebrate Liam.
We headed out to do a little bowling and Laser Tag.

The boys had fun bowling and a blast playing Laser Tag!
It was fun to watch them run around, laugh, and just have fun with each other!
After a couple of rounds, they were hungry and ready for a some birthday supper!
Thanks to the Dollar Store, I could check the "football/sports" theme party off my list!
And thanks to the internet and my Pampered Chef bowl,
I could check the "non-flat" football cake off the list as well!

He is eight...
Liam got a Toby Mac CD for his birthday from us, and so the boys ended the evening by having a dance party.  I think they did this for at least thirty minutes.  Playing different songs...  Dancing around the house in a line...  Copying each other... Laughing hard... Just having fun with friends!
It blessed my heart!
Sweet, Simple, Fun... the perfect way to celebrate EIGHT!

Weekend Joy

I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!
The Sovereign Lord is my strength!
  Habakkuk 3:18b,19a NLT
The Lord is my strength and shield.
I trust him with all my heart.
He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.
I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.
Psalm 28:7 NIV

Praising Him today for the strength and joy that He gives!
When seeing a sunrise like this... how can a heart not burst out in songs of thanksgiving?
~smile~

To my son on your 8th birthday...

March 21, 2013

My Liam,

Today you turned eight.  How can that be?  I feel as if the older you get, the faster the years fly by.  I feel as if the last year I have watched you leave all “little boy” behind you and just be a boy.  A boy who is trying to figure out who he is and what he likes.  A boy who is trying to express himself more in what he wears, the things he does, and how he relates to people.  You have definitely just started to enter into the “tween” years and all that involves… yet there is still this innocence about you that my heart cherishes.
This morning at breakfast, you told me that your favorite birthday ever was the day you were born.  When I asked why, you said, “Well… if it wasn’t for that birthday I wouldn’t be here!”  Those thoughts just encompass who you are right now to a tee… and I love it!

Who are you at eight years old?

You are a curious boy… you love to learn about anything and everything.  Some of your favorite books right now are Children’s Encyclopedias or “books of knowledge”.  We are studying early American history, and you love it.  You want to know all about the presidents and the wars.  You love all information, and it excites you.
You are an active boy… you wake up early each day and your system is on “go” until you hit the pillow at night.  You love to run, jump, dance, and play.  You have an intense personality that likes to plan out your day and then live it up!  Not only are you physically active, but you have a big and active imagination!  You are always thinking up stories or battles or games in your head.  You love to use dramatic play with Ainsley and Kallan, or set up scenes with your Legos.  Whether it’s your body that’s going or your mind that’s going… you are just going!
You are a social boy… oh so social!  You love people!  You love your friends!  You can be with one friend all morning, have another friend over all afternoon, and still ask me if you can go out and play with another friend after that!  You get your energy from people, and as you have gotten older this year, it’s been neat to see that grow and evolve.

You are a sweet boy… You can be so loving and kind to Ainsley and Kallan when you want to.  You still love to snuggle with us and get hugs from us.   You think of thoughtful gifts to give others.  You are becoming such a big help to your dad and I... whether it’s making your own breakfast or helping Kallan get on his shoes.
There are so many more words that could describe who you are… but at the same time I’m at a loss for putting who you are into just the right words.

You are the one who made me a mama eight years ago.

You are the one who I’m figuring out this whole parenting thing with the most, and some days are better than others.

You are the one I have to ask forgiveness from the most.

You are so intense… in great ways and challenging ways.

You are very smart.

You are funny – or at least think you are.

You love anything electronic… ipad, Wii, Leapster, Computer…

You love history, spelling, math, and reading.

You are starting to really like music.

You love ravioli for supper and ice cream for dessert.

You have a very first born personality.

You love sports – to watch and to play.

You have started to find a love for reading God’s Word.

You have a very confident personality.

You enjoy playing games and you are very competitive.

You love, love, love your friends.

You love Star Wars, Legos, and Nerf Guns.

You make me smile, yet grab at my heart, as I watch you grow up into the start of a young man.

Liam, my prayer for you as you turn eight is that your heart would be soft towards God and His Word.  I pray that you would have a deep love for God and cling to Him your whole life.  I pray that the Word of God you have in your head would come to live in your heart and play out in your life.  I pray that you would grow to have a deep love for others… wanting to serve them and put their needs before yours.  And in all things, that you would want to glorify God in all you do!
I love you so much son!  So much!  Happy 8th Birthday!

Having Fun While Time Flies...

When did it get to be the middle of March?  Between throwing a double birthday bash for two of my favorite boys one weekend and then spending a long weekend in Arizona with Tim the next, much of March has passed me by!  Here are some favorite memories from our last few weeks...

Yes, my little guy is still lining up his cars and trucks...
Liam had a blast participating in an Awana game competition called,
Sparks-A-Rama...
Awana is the Wednesday night program he attends at church.
Brookside Church got 2nd place, and Liam did great and had so much fun!
(Liam is in the red... the 4th boy in the line...)
Celebrating a little early and a little late for our double birthday bash with our families...
I can't explain the excitement this one had about getting a Wii!
Or the excitement this one had about getting a new pack of cars....
But you can see the excitement over our own game of Sorry!
 Three Candles...
 Eight Candles...
The next weekend, we headed to Arizona with some college friends to spend a weekend away in the sun.  We got sunshine two days and rain and cold two days... but it was better than the blizzard that Nebraska got while we were gone!  We found some great deals at the outlet malls, had some amazing food, and enjoyed just hanging out with each other.
Our Pink Jeep tour in Sedona was SO cold and SO wet... but SO fun!
Even in the rain, the red rocks were so pretty...
On the sunny days, we found two Phoenix mountains to hike which was a
treat when you live in Nebraska!!
It was great to get out and about... to soak in some sun... and see some great views!
(our trail... when you come from Nebraska... anything with elevation seems amazing!)

Of course we can't be in Arizona during spring training and not see the Royals play!
It was the best weather of the week... and we soaked in all we could before catching our flight home.

We hadn't gotten away like this for four years... it was so nice and a huge blessing!
The sun and warmth on my skin was also encouraging to my heart that spring and summer will be here soon... even if we did fly home to 8 inches of snow in our front yard!
It is the middle of March you know... It can't stay around for long!

Words

I was thinking the other day....
If I got paid every time I said one of these things... I'd be very rich.

You are not the parent.

This is when you get to practice patience!

What are you doing?

Sit in your chair, please.

Thank you for doing that.

Give me two more minutes.

Look at my eyes...

I need to see your hands working.

Love you!

You are not in charge of her.

Do you see what I'm doing right now?

Come here puppy!
(and no... we do not have a dog!)

I love to snuggle you!

You need to find some self control.

Oh Lord... help me!

You need to use your words to solve problems... not cry and scream.

When did you get so cute?

Give me a kiss!

Seriously?

I. Love. You. So. Much.

These three... I never knew they would teach me so much... grow me so much...
and challenge my heart so much.
I never knew I would love them... so much... and be so rich, even if I don't get paid for my words.
